Deer Stand Hunting

Deer tree stand hunting for whitetail deer is a great getaway from he rest of the world. The quiet time you get to spend in the woods gives you a lot of time to reflect on life.

If you don't have a comfortable deer stand though, it might not be the quiet time you are looking for.

A good cheap deer stand will have windows that open to the inside. This will allow you to keep the windows closed while you are hunting waiting for deer to show up. And when a deer does show up, you can open the windows to the inside so as not to spook the deer.

A proper deer stand will also have good insulation. Since most of your time in the deer stand will be in the winter when it is fairly cold, good insulation can keep you comfortable and focused on the more important things, like spotting deer. The walls of most deer stands are just a few millimetres thick. A good foam board insulation for your deer stand will go a long way to keeping you comfortable while you are hunting.

Choosing A Deer Stand

Hunting deer is no easy task. One of the many things you have to consider that can make your hunting easier is which deer stand to choose.

There are many to choose from. You could build your own deer stand, or you could buy a deer stand from one of the many name brand manufacturers.

If you are hunting around high brush and trees, you will want a deer stand that is high enough to give you a clear line of shot over any obstruction. A good choice might be a steel tower blind or a ladder deer stand.

If you are hunting a wide open pasture, you might want a ground blind deer stand. This type is easy to set up and is often times portable so you can move it wherever you want. This is a big advantage to staying where the deer are and it saves you a lot of money by keeping you from needing to build multiple deer stands.

If you have a permanent food source in the area you are hunting, a tall permanent tower stand will probably be great. It will be comfortable and it will shield you from the elements. And, since the food supply won't be moving, you don't need the advantage of having a portable deer stand.

Deer Stands And Safety

Safety is the #1 concern when it comes to hunting from deer stands.

Contrary to popular belief, guns are not the most common cause of injury to hunters. Deer stands are set off the ground up to higher than 20 feet, and when a hunter falls from one, they face anything from bruises to broken bones to death.

There are many ways you can prevent the risk of such injury.

Remember to never take off your harness if you are in a tree stand.

This is one of the advantages of deer blinds over deer stands, they are fully enclosed and quite a bit safer.

Check your deer stand each hunting season and ensure its structural integrity. Deer stands are well-known to rot and rust. Any damage to the structure of the stand should be repaired, and if it can't be repaired, the whole stand should be replaced. Replacing deer stands is just one of the costs of hunting that you need to be prepared to cover.

Another safety precaution you can take is to always hunt in groups. If everyone in the group is expected to be back at a certain time and you don't show up, the rest of the group will know something is wrong and they will be able to head over to your deer stand and offer you help in the event of an injury.

These are just a few things you should keep in mind about deer stand safety.
